The Story Behind the Piece
George’s inspiration for “Flatlander” came in part from his love and respect for his grandfather, Nelse Lundeen. As a boy, George often visited his grandfather’s farm in Kearney County, Nebraska. Reminding us of a simpler existence, this piece is also a tribute to the many “flatlanders” who tilled the soil of our Great Plains.
George began this piece by experimenting with designs using a head and a hat. The challenge in working on “Flatlander” was to begin with an essentially static design and make it move or flow.
