“The Joy of Music” celebrates the way music brings people together. As musicians perform and children sing along, the sculpture captures the laughter, connection, and sense of community that music so often creates.

Highlights

The Story Behind the Piece

“I was approached by a local woman who had been the first music teacher in Loveland, Colorado. She asked me to create a set of musicians to be placed at the city’s Civic Center. We collaborated as to which instruments would be represented, and the piece evolved to include a bass player, a flute player, a violin player, and two singing children. As she was in her 90’s, the timely completion of this project was imperative. She lived to see the celebration of the installation of the sculpture in her city. On the bronze sheet music held by the children was inscribed the song her husband used to sing to her, “I’d Love to Live in Loveland with a Girl Like You”.

Since this time several sets of this edition, the “Joy of Music”, have been placed in locations in the United States and in France. “The Joy of Music” models include my sister-in-law, my old friend Danny, my niece, and my son. The good looking bass player is me.” – George Lundeen
