The Story Behind the Piece
For the creation of “Old Man and the Cat,” George had no client input. A friend mentioned how much he enjoyed Hemingway’s work and after some research, George thought Hemingway would be a good character to sculpt, since he, too, enjoys American writers.
After much research and reading almost all Hemingway wrote, George decided to depict him as a fisherman, because he always enjoyed fishing. Hemingway’s time in Cuba, where he wrote “Old Man and the Sea,” is what George researched most, along with Hemingway’s six-toed cat. He thought he’d want to be portrayed with one of his six-toed cats. The rod is the one he fished with in Havana and the reel is one of the originals he used. References were found in photos of Hemingway fishing in Cuba. George gave him a bit of a smile, because he believed Ernest Hemingway was happy when he was fishing.
