The Story Behind the Piece

“The sculpture “Prairie Flowers” began as a young lady hanging her wash on a clothesline. My thoughts were to have the clothesline full of sheets, shirts, socks and all blowing in the wind. As I worked on the composition, it kept falling apart.

At one point, I became frustrated and told my model to pack up the stuff we had been working with, so she piled it all up in an old wicker basket and began to leave the studio. On looking up from my modeling stand, I saw her with the basket on her hip and that was the image that became “Prairie Flowers.” Along with the basket on her hip, I endeavored to show her gazing over the prairie while leaning into the ever-present wind. It’s always good to notice what your model does when your first idea goes south!” – George Lundeen
