The Story Behind the Piece

“The sculpture of “Robert Frost” was made with a great deal of help from a friend named Walker Hancock.

Walter was a very fine sculptor who led the Pennsylvania Academy for many years. In my research for this sculpture, I came across a photo of Walker sculpting a portrait bust of Frost from “life.” I immediately called the National Sculpture Society in New York and asked where I could find the finished bust. They said they didn’t know where the finished bust was, but gave me a number to call. The number was Walker Hancock’s. On calling him, he said he had sculpted the bust in the late ‘40’s and asked if I might need his measurements and notes from his files. Within a week, I was knocking on Walker's door. In Walker's studio were all the measurements I would need to create the sculpture. I’m quite sure this was the only place in the world they could be found.

Along with the many photos I found in the archives at Dartmouth (Frost’s Alma mater). I was able to create the face and overall expression you see on the sculpture. I hope you enjoy the sculpture of this truly great American poet.” – George Lundeen
